Broken in Silence
The granite on the hilltop was blasted and fragmented, with large rocks being hauled away while the remaining rubble scattered across the mining site.
At the foot of the mountain, I stumbled upon a shattered stone. One half of the stone had vanished, while the other stood silently. A slender groove marked the stone's cut surface, hinting at the placement of explosives. After the blast, the stone resembled an apple, with a portion chiseled away, creating a platform-like space. Eventually, many statues were placed on this platform.
Standing before the serene, shattered behemoth, a tinge of fear and sorrow grips me as I observe the exposed core and textured profile of the rock. A liquid-like energy seems to have once flowed within the stone's interior, leaving me curious if it retains memories of ancient oceans. The lightning-like traces of the explosion linger in my mind, and the fractured stone and statues seemed to share a connection.
In 2021, I captured the landscapes of abandoned quarries, ancient stone tombs, and other rocky environments near my home. The photographs depict rocks that have endured centuries of human extraction and utilization, some dating back thousands of years, while others are more recent. In this body of work, I scatter the collected fragments from quarries and various locations onto photographic paper, creating images. These photos are then reprinted on traditional fiber-based paper, employing various methods to imagine the impact of divine forces on the stones, in response to my emotions standing in front of the shattered behemoth.
